Race for the Cure

On Sunday the 1st of October the ninth annual race against breast cancer, the RACE for the CURE, will take place in Zappeio, in the centre of Athens.

Our school has taken part in this event every year and we are going to do so on Sunday 1st as well. Many pupils have already expressed their intention to participate. Parents, and other family members, are also welcome! The fee for participation is 6€ for the 2 km walk or 8€ if you wish to run 5 km with a timing chip. You will also get a hat and a t-shirt on the day.

This year if you wish to run the 5 km you must register electronically here, the latest by Saturday 23rd September. The money raised is used by the “Panhellenic Society of Women with Breast Cancer, ALMA ZOIS” which organises the race to support women who have or had breast cancer and to raise awareness in revention of this disease. If you wish to take part please contact Ms. Kladouchou.

The meeting point for our St. Lawrence College participation will be, as with previous years, at the top of the steps that connect the main Zappeion Square with the large fountain at 10:30am on Sunday morning.

Let’s all be there to support such an important cause and let’s make St. Lawrence College noticeable once again.

United Nations International Peace Day trip (Years 9-13)

Our school has been asked to take part in the celebration of the United Nations International Peace Day, which promotes and strengthens the ideals of peace and non-violence amongst all nations. The celebration will take place on Saturday 23rd September at Epidavros and Nafplion and our school will be represented by a group of St. Lawrence College pupils (Years 9 to 13) and staff.
First of all the pupils will go to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Epidavros and will be met by the Mayor. They will enjoy a formal tour of the archaeological site and ancient theatre. Then they will meet with other students from all over Greece to discuss the following issues in the ancient theatre:
•    What is peace?
•    What stands in the way of peace?
•    What is the meaning of ‘Ekeheria’?
•    How can we achieve world peace?

They will be involved in creating a video on how the vision and the voice of youth can inspire world peace among nations and this will then be viewed in 180 countries.
Afterwards, pupils will depart for Nafplion. They will have time to enjoy a taverna meal (not included) before going to the square for the ‘International Peacejam’. UNESCO officials, Olympic and Para-Olympic athletes and choirs from around the world will be there too! The event is due to end at 9pm.
Some of the discussions will be in Greek so pupils need to be made aware of this. However, non-Greek speakers are equally welcome as long as they are aware that this will be the case.
We will be departing from school at 8am precisely and returning to school again at approximately 11.30pm.

Presentation by Andy Buck for parents

Dear Parents,
I am delighted to invite you to a very valuable presentation for the parents of our pupils happening later this month at our school. A leading figure in British education, Mr Andy Buck, will be speaking on strategies that can be used by parents to support their child in his or her education. This really is an opportunity not to be missed and is equally applicable for parents of pupils from any year group across the junior and senior school.

Andy Buck’s influence on education and schools in the UK has been immense over the last twenty-five years. After headships of two schools in the UK, Andy was designated as a National Leader of Education, so outstanding were the improvements in his schools. In 2009 he was appointed as a Director of the National College of School Leadership in the UK, which is the premier training provider for UK Headteachers.

In addition, Andy was appointed as the Managing Director of one of the UK’s largest academy chain of schools, United Learning, and was responsible for setting up the UK government’s Teaching Schools programme – where new teachers are trained, assessed and gain full teaching qualifications while employed in schools.

Somehow, Andy has also found time to set up two educational organisations which support school leaders, ‘Leadership Matters’ and ‘#honk’ and has written five influential books on education and leadership. True to his roots as a Geography teacher, Andy is currently the Honorary Vice President of the UK Geographical Association and is Education Advisor to the Duke of Edinburgh/International Award.

Clearly Andy is a very busy man and so I am thrilled that he is able to visit St. Lawrence College for two days and work with senior leaders of the school, middle leaders, pupils and parents.

Andy will speak to and answer questions from parents in the Cultural Hall at 09.00am, Friday 29th September. The session will last approximately 90 minutes and as I anticipate this will be a very popular event, I ask parents to contact the junior or senior school by phone (210 8917000) or email (juniorschool@slc.gr or seniorschool@slc.gr) to tell us you will be attending and to help us plan the event.

I strongly urge you to come as firstly Andy’s advice to you will be very valuable as you support your child in their learning, and secondly because you will find the experience highly rewarding and entertaining – Andy is a fascinating and engaging speaker and will really challenge how you think about education and learning! I look forward to seeing you at this exciting event.

Sincerely,
Phil Holden
Headmaster
