An Evening of Entertainment

On Thursday 26th April 2018, a wonderful evening of entertainment was held at the school. Children from both the Junior and Senior schools returned for an event in which they showed off a marvellous array of talents and skills that they have been working at for some time in preparation for the show. There were young dancers from our Junior Dance and Movement Club; Ms Tsirigoti's Senior and Year 6 Greek Dance Clubs; pupils in the Senior Drama Club; our choir, the St Lawrence Singers; as well as a wide range of musicians who receive tuition at school on instruments ranging from the piano, the violin, the guitar and drums too.

The audience was delighted to view such a fine combination of pieces: both dramatic and musical, both traditional and modern. Congratulations are in order to all who took part, pupils and staff, as their efforts resulted in a successful evening all round. Well done to all!

28th October is Remembered

In an annual tradition of remembering the sacrifices and courage of those before us, St Lawrence College had a number of memorable events to mark the national day of remembrance in Greece - 28th October.

Under the guidance of Ms Tsirigoti and the Greek department, the children of Years 5 and 6 in the Junior School performed a beautiful piece which saw them show empathy and understanding of the great hardship and suffering that the people of Greece endured during the harsh war years.

Over in the senior school, the national day was celebrated with a play presented by pupils of Years 8-11, members of the Greek Drama Club. The play was a dramatized adaptation of the second part of the Alki Zei’s novel Petros’ War on the topic of the Nazi Occupation in Greece and the changes in people’s lives. At the same time, a PowerPoint presentation showed images, audio and video extracts from that time.

Very well done to the children and staff who gave us every reason to feel proud of their heartfelt performance.

Other Clubs

Among the many clubs that St. Lawrence College pupils can choose from, we are especially proud of the following:

Greek Drama Club

Pupils of all nationalities and from all school years are encouraged to join this club, which meets twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays during break times.

The aim of the Greek Drama Club is to present something innovative for Greek National Celebrations, something of interest, but always related to that particular period in history. This usually includes a short play, Greek dances and songs.

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club meets once a week, usually on Fridays, and is open to all pupils in the senior school.

The aim of the club is to promote and raise awareness and understanding of environmental issues, to instil a sense of responsibility and personal commitment to protect and preserve the environment and to encourage pupils to learn more about some of the most important issues facing the world today –i.e. the benefits of recycling at home, endangered species, pollution, deforestation, and the fragility of the rainforests.

Another important objective of the club is also to give support to Greek environmental organisations, such as Arktouros and the Turtle Rescue Centre, by arranging visits and holding fundraising events.

Greek Support Club

The Greek Support Club aims to offer help to those who encounter difficulties with their Greek language skills. The club is open to native and non-native speakers alike, as well as to pupils from all years. It meets every Thursday at lunch time but participating pupils are encouraged to go and seek help any time they deem it necessary.

Yearbook Club

  • The Yearbook that is produced each year is a highly prized possession for every pupil and continues to give those pupils great joy long after they leave our school. For that reason, it is important that the Yearbook is produced to the highest of standards – and that is the job of the Yearbook Club. This club is open to pupils from all years, but it is usually senior members of the school body who are the most productive in it.
  • The aim of the Yearbook Club is for members to:
  • Proof read yearbook pages which are being put together and critically assess them for necessary changes.
  • Gather information/interview graduating pupils for the graduate page.
  • Get assignments from departments or year groups to be used as resources.
  • Promote regular contact with subject teachers so that club members keep abreast of events.
  • Categorize resources gathered by grade, department or theme.
  • Write text to go with the photographs that are to be used in the yearbook.
  • Offer new ideas for the yearbook.
  • Act as photographers if they wish and take photos of sporting events/other events for potential use.

Meetings happen about once per month, so that members can check on their combined progress and arrange new assignments. They usually take place during lunch break, however senior pupils often meet whenever they have free time during the day.

Forensics

The main aim of the Forensics Club is to train pupils in the skills of public speaking and in investigating the spoken and written word in many of its forms. Practices take place during lunchtime on weekdays as well as on Saturdays in the run up to competitions. The club is open to all pupils of the senior school. The team, which represents St. Lawrence College at the annual Panhellenic Forensics Association Tournament, is chosen through try-outs.

The Panhellenic Forensics Tournament is a four-day tournament, where 18-22 schools with over 400 participants regularly take part. Participants compete in a number of events:

  • Oral Interpretation of Literature (comic or dramatic)
  • Duet Acting (comic or dramatic)
  • Impromptu Speaking
  • Original Oratory
  • Group Discussion
  • Debate

St. Lawrence College has been participating, with great success, in the Panhellenic Forensics Association Tournament for the last 15 years, with a large number of pupils reaching the finals and achieving firsts in all the events. We have also consistently ranked in the top three schools in Greece and have won the Debate Cup several times. Overall, Forensics is one of the most vibrant and stimulating clubs in the school, with a reputation for ongoing excellence.

There are other competitions, tournaments and events that happen during the year both between schools and within our school. Many of these are specifically aimed at younger members of the Forensics and debate club. Above all, this active, vibrant community of performers and debaters develops key skills through an exciting and stimulating experience. Come along and find out!

A Tribute to William Shakespeare

Twenty Senior Drama Club pupils of St. Lawrence College paid homage on Friday 19th February to the great Bard of Avon who died in 1616. The stage became their world as they enacted “The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”. A difficult play in Shakespearean English, the Drama club pupils worked hard to bring this production together. With Nathan Marks as Romeo Montague and Rosie Vorri as Juliet Capulet, the stage was set for the magic of Shakespeare’s play to emerge.

Casting plays is not always easy and yet each and every one of the cast rose to the occasion and gave their best, at the performance that evening. From the excellent piano accompaniment courtesy of Theodora Gyftaki, to the make-up application backstage by Ema Rankovic, each member of the cast discovered their potential both on stage and backstage, making the production a success. Lord Capulet, played by Rebecca Jackson and Lord Montague played by Nicholas Demenopoulos joined hands at the end of the play, leaving the audience to ponder on the wisdom they gained through tragedy. Lady Capulet played by Tess Poulimenakos looked sadly up at her husband and held onto his arm. Benvolio played by Rea Karkabi looked down at the tragic body of Paris, played by Nefeli Vitoraki and Kostas Vitalis, Isabella Allen, Akim Valetov, the Hagis brothers Nicholas and Andreas, and Artem Shtefan were left to ponder on the tragedies that had befallen them all.

All in all, the performance was a great success, giving pupils the opportunity to explore their inner potential, share their talents with us and enhance their self-esteem.  The delightful nurse played by Christina Grammatikopoulos and the wise monk played by Yannis Apostolakopoulos, left us with a smile throughout the performance and the beautiful voice of Angela Frangos singing the theme song from Romeo and Juliet, carried with it, the image and hope for ‘a new world – a world of shining hope.. for you and me.’

Director Lindy McMullin was supported by Panagiotis Spiroudis on lighting and audio help, Virginia Poulimenakou’s wonderful scenery, Yiannis Kotsomitis’ technical support and Dimitris Zafiris’ stage development.

Beyond the Classroom - Junior

Extra-curricular clubs are a great way to make new friends, get fit or learn new skills in a safe environment. You can find a whole range of clubs available at St. Lawrence College -from infant yoga to chess.

We offer both Daytime Clubs during lunchtime/school hours, and Afternoon Clubs from 3:30 – 4:30pm, to children from Foundation Stage 1 up to Year 6.These cover a wide array of activities that make full use of our outstanding facilities, including a 25-metre outdoor heated swimming pool, outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor artificial pitch, as well as a four-court sports hall for indoor sports, such as basketball and volleyball.

Team sports
Many of our clubs promote team building and physical activity through indoor and outdoor sports, such as football, rugby, tennis, basketball, yoga, karate, rhythmics, and more. We are fortunate to have professional coaches who use their expertise to provide high quality coaching to all participating pupils.

Swimming
Swimming is a life-saving skill and can also be the beginning of many enjoyable water experiences. At St. Lawrence College, we offer afternoon swimming lessons to pupils from 2 ½ to 18 years of age, taught by friendly, caring and fully qualified instructors. Structured, planned lessons cater for all abilities, from water confidence classes right through to advanced club swimming.

Music
At St. Lawrence we believe that music is a creative and social art to be enjoyed by all and we are proud to be offering to our children the opportunity to enjoy musical experiences in our After-school Music School and Orchestra.

The Music School offers instrumental tuition in piano, violin, guitar and flute and provides children with the chance to prepare for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Examinations.

The Orchestra is great opportunity for budding musicians to display their ability by rehearsing once a week and practising along with other musicians for school concerts.

Other clubs
Other club activities provided throughout the year include the Junior School Choirs, Greek Drama/Dance for National holiday celebrations, Eco-council, Chess and Art Club.

Practical details
At the end of the summer term, families receive letters with all the available choices for both Daytime and Afternoon Clubs to be offered the following academic year. Included in the letter is the intended age group and the cost, if any, of each club.

The timetable/daily programme is drawn up in a way that provides children with varying and engaging activities throughout the year.

Most clubs (e.g. football/drama) are very popular and as a result they may have a waiting list. It’s important to register sooner rather than later, since all places are subject to availability.

An after-school activities shuttle bus service is available, with several drop off points, for those pupils who cannot be picked up directly from school by their parent/guardian.

Years 3 & 4 Greek Theatre trip

“Argonautic Expedition”

On Thursday, 20th March, the Years 3 and 4 pupils had the exciting opportunity to watch the play “Argonautic Expedition” (Αργοναυτική Εκστρατεία) at the Christmas Theatre. The performance was a captivating journey into Greek mythology, bringing the ancient myth of Jason and the Argonauts to life in a way that was both engaging and educational. The play skilfully introduced the children to the story of Phrixus and Elle, setting the stage for the legendary Golden Fleece and its importance in the adventure that would follow.

As the story unfolded, the pupils were transported into the mythical world of ancient Greece, starting with Jason’s birth in Iolkos and his upbringing by the wise Centaur Chiron on Mount Pelion. The play vividly portrayed Jason’s thrilling quest with the Argonauts, captivating the audience with its dramatic scenes and colourful characters. The children were enthralled by the performance, enjoying the blend of mythology, action, and adventure. It was an unforgettable experience that deepened their understanding of Greek mythology while keeping them fully engaged in the story.

In their next group stage game, our boys faced Campion and despite going 1-0 down, they managed to bring it back winning 3-1 and won their group. In the semi-finals our boys faced Pierce College. Unfortunately, after a tight game our boys lost to the eventual champions 1-0 which meant that our boys managed an amazing 3rd place finish!

In the girl’s tournament 8 schools were split into 2 groups. In their first game of the tournament our girls faced host team Anatolia College and after a very close game they lost 1-0. In their second group stage game our girls bounced back beating Athens College 1-0. In their final group stage game, our girls faced American Farm School and easily won 5-0.
