Drama at St. Lawrence College
At St. Lawrence College we recognise the power of “drama” as an educational tool whatever the age of a child.
Drama provokes imagination, exercises powers of expression and supports the emotional maturity of a child. But also self-control, interpretation and teamwork are among the many skills enhanced by the process of a successful drama production. Above all drama at St. Lawrence College is tremendous fun for pupils, creating an outlet for energy and both physical and cerebral creativity along the way.
...hundreds of pupils have matured thanks to those experiences...
Highly popular drama clubs in both the junior and senior school work towards annual productions while taking time to explore theatrical and dramatic technique and practice along the way. Pupils are encouraged to learn about themselves through performance while others derive their sense of accomplishment by working backstage on props, lighting, sound and set design.
Recent productions, including Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”; Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” in the senior school and “The Wizard of OZ” and “Modern Fairy Tales” and “Alice in Wonderland” in the junior school, earned rave reviews. More importantly hundreds of pupils have grown for the experience and will never forget being a part of a memorable performance.

Dramatic Scenes!
On Thursday, 18th of May, the Senior School Drama Club in collaboration with members of the St Lawrence Choir delighted a packed audience in our auditorium with their excellent acting skills under the direction of Dr Lindy McMullin. The audience was literally transported back in time to Massachusetts in the 1800’s and certainly taken aback with the talented cast who carried out their roles so professionally, as if they were on stage in Broadway. All need to be heartily congratulated for their hard work and dedication to Drama as well as the excellent cooperation with the choir members who delighted all with their singing.
Drama Club
On consecutive Fridays, the 4th and 11th June, our senior and junior school drama clubs put on their wonderful performances. Both plays, 'The Lost Tribe of Arrendale’ and ‘The Spirit of the Jungle’ were versions of famous stories adapted by Dr Lindy McMullen, our drama club teacher. Our pupils had managed to persevere through a lockdown with online rehearsals, then on our return to school it was all about preparing for each of the big nights. They did an outstanding job, performing like professional actors and making all their families and teachers proud of them. Well done to all who participated!
Dramatic Scenes!
Dr. McMullin's Junior Drama Club, together with Ms Romeos’ Choir Club delighted a packed audience with their singing, dancing, and acting on Friday 16th June. The Fairies in the Wood were spectacular despite the rain that fell on their fragile wings! As they say in all the best theatres though, “the show must go on!” In the second performance of the evening, the cast of Moana came alive in Hawaii to meet with Maui and Gramma Tala. The children performed with really professional acting skills, and everyone was impressed. Let's not forget the songs sung by the choir, that accompanied the actors beautifully. Congratulations to all for a wonderful evening of entertainment!
Senior School Drama
The Senior Drama Club presents:
An adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s ‘A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS’.
Follow the Yellow Brick Road
The Junior Drama Club, along with help from several members of the Senior Drama Club, waltzed down the yellow brick road under the direction of Ms L. McMullin on Wednesday the 1st June 2016 for a memorable performance of The Wizard of Oz. The play opened with ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow,’ against a cheerful, shimmering backdrop with characters of the Wizard of Oz from the Senior Drama Club introducing Frank Baum’s famous work to an appreciative audience.
In search of a heart, brain and courage, the Junior School actors who played the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion inspired their audience with song and dance. Munchkins were supervised by their Queen and fairy and made sure the story’s star Dorothy and her friends escaped from the Wicked Witch of the West, whose laughter sent chills down our spines! Along with the Wicked Witch, her sleek, hissing cats did everything possible to stop the intrepid group reaching their goal.
The journey to the Emerald City was filled with adventure that saw characters fall under the witch’s spell to become a buzzing bee or even just a shadow! The Wizard of Oz himself, oblivious to it all, stood in great splendour between the Mayor and the Barrister. The incredible Guest Relations Officer kept constant watch as the scene gradually unfolded. The tale’s message was clear: in facing the shadows within us, we overcome our fears and move forward beyond our dreams and imagination! Even the witch was transformed, as she gazed at the sky, longing to move beyond the rainbow.
Special thanks go out to all who made the play a success and through their help ensured that once again, St Lawrence Drama Club reached such a high standard.
Peter Pan
On 20th June, the junior school drama club put on an outstanding performance of J.M. Barrie's famous tale of lost childhood, Peter Pan. Our drama club pupils from years 2 to 6 worked tirelessly with our director Ms Kiriou, to create a wonderful evening of entertainment. The children acted as Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Wendy and the Darling family, the lost boys, fairies and pirates with some super choreography involved too. The St Lawrence choir accompanied the production under the musical direction of Mr Terzakis and added an atmosphere of sweetness and dramatic appeal to the whole event.
Congratulations to all our amazing pupils for a delightful performance!

A Cold Case
An adaptation of J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls.
The stage in the Cultural Hall of St Lawrence College came to life on Friday the 17th of February, with an outstanding performance by the Senior Drama Club under the direction of Lindy McMullin. Transformed by the superb antique furniture, the candles lit by Gabrielle Ross in her role as Edna and the professional lighting skills of James Ratcliffe, the audience was transported into the 1900’s and the Birling residence. The investigators, who opened the play, invited the audience to look at the evidence of the case of Eva Smith who had committed suicide in 1912. Ali Alkoc in his role as Butler, opened the door of the residence to Arthur Birling played by Rea Karkabi, Mrs Birling played by Christina Grammatikopoulos, Sheila Birling played by Katerina Ross, Eric Birling played by Andreas Hagis and Gerald Croft, Sheila’s fiancée, played by Artem Shtefan.
The highlight of the play came early on in the evening as Arthur and Gerald chatted in front of the fireplace and the ladies sat in the drawing room, playing cards and talking to Eric. Inspector Goole played by Yannis Apostolakopoulos made his grand entrance, accompanied by his assistant played by Andreas Kalketenidis. The tension rose as each member of the family were brought to reflect of the role they had played in the life of Eva Smith, that reached a peak with Eric Birling’s perfect display of emotion. Were they all responsible in some way for the girl’s death, and if they were, could the investigators played by Nefeli Vitoraki, Alexandra Michaelides, Aurora Petzetakis , Filippos Chen and Eleni Kalendi persuade the audience that this was a cold case that could never be solved? The performers were exceptional, each in their unique way, and the audience was kept spell bound for the entire duration of the play.
A true success for the start of Education through Drama, all who were involved in the play are to be highly commended.
We look forward to welcoming you all to the next performance on the 9th of June 2017, in the open theatre when the Junior Drama Club will enact an adaptation of Mary Poppins.
Golden Under-16 Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams
On March 12th, our Under-16 boys’ and girls’ basketball teams achieved great success in their respective tournaments.
The girls travelled to Campion School, where they faced four different teams. They won all four games by an impressive average margin of 17 points! The girls were thrilled to bring home gold medals just in time to cheer on the boys, who were up against St. Catherine’s in the final.
The boys’ final was full of dramatic moments. With just 30 seconds left on the clock, they were trailing 27-30. They quickly tied the game with a clutch 3-pointer. Then, with 18 seconds remaining and the game tied at 30-30, the boys regained possession. In a stunning turn of events, they scored the winning basket just as the buzzer sounded the end of the game, securing a dramatic comeback victory. The players celebrated alongside the girls, who cheered them on from the stands.
A huge congratulations to both teams for their outstanding performances, and a big thank you to our coaches, Ms. Tzavella and Mr. Karamatsios, for their hard work with the teams.
Cyrano de Bergerac
Cyrano de Bergerac, a soldier in the French Army, is a gifted poet who unfortunately has an obnoxiously large nose. He has endless unrequited love for his distant cousin, the beautiful Roxanne, but he believes his ugliness bars him from the "dream of being loved by even an ugly woman." Roxanne loves Christian de Neuvillette, who is unable to romance her, so Cyrano writes love letters to Roxanne and woos her whilst pretending to be Christian.
The senior school drama club put on a wonderful performance of this tragic comedy with real gusto, under the directorship of our new drama teacher Ms Marianthi Kiriou. The play was performed on a warm May evening in the amphitheatre under a full moon rising. The cast was made up of young pupils in the senior school from KS3, and we were impressed by their abilities. Families, friends and staff gave them all a well-deserved standing ovation!
Congratulations to them all!
